Currier & Ives in the South

We had a storm that may only happen once or twice in a life time. The past couple of years have been an exception.

A few years ago Georgia was having one of the worst draughts ever. When we were looking for a place to get off the road once in awhile, we looked for a place on Strom Thurman Lake, North of Augusta, Georgia. We found that 90% of the docks were out of water because the lake was so low and it looked like some of the docks hadn’t seen water in years.  We were lucky enough to find a place that the dock was still in 8 feet of water.

All that changed last year when we had so much rain that the lake was full and overflowing the dam.  The people that owned all this land originally still live on a portion of it. I got  to talk to him several months ago and he said that he lived on the land for 70 some years now and he has never seen that much rain before.

That brings me to our Currier & Ives  header, the past few weeks we have had some of the coldest weather southern Georgia has seen or maybe ever seen. January 29,2014 the temperature was 1 to 3 degrees above zero. We had water pipes, schedule 40 pipes, burst and split down the length of them. We ended up with out water for 4 days. That storm was the Polar Vortex Storm.  Fast forward to February 11 thru 13, 2014  we were hit with another storm this time freezing cold weather with rain ice snow and more ice. All the time it remained in the freezing zone. We had trees that hung over our house full off ice , scarred that one of them would break and come crashing down on us. The porch and all three sets of steps were covered in ice. We worried about letting the dogs out because we were afraid they would slip on the steps and get hurt.  There was no way we could get them to a vet  because we could not get out of our drive way due to the ice. This was pretty scary being from California most of my life and not use to this kind of weather and coldness. The 6:00 PM news today announced that there are still over a half a million people in Georgia without electricity. Many of the people’s homes are all electric.  For us we never lost electricity we were lucky. Relatives down in Augusta, GA have been without electricity for a couple of days. My brother-in –law and his wife are in Augusta,GA and without electricity stayed in bed all day yesterday just to keep warm.

I was able to capture a few photographs that made it feel like a currier and Ives scene. This part of Georgia rarely ever sees snow.

Boat Races

Saturday our grandson and a few of his friends came up to our place to go watch the boat races. The races did not start on time. We later found out it was an out law race. It was an unsanctioned race yet the people that organized it wanted all the racers to pay $ 75.00 dollars entry fee . That was voted down by the majority, the races never really got off the water [ground so to speak].  There were a few boats that blew off a little steam and they were great .

The reason I’m writing this post is because of the photography.  When you go along on an outing like this you take your camera and take lots of pictures. The photos are usually not that significant, they are just good to look at and have memories. Once in awhile one of the photos speaks for it’s self.   I’m going to show a few of those pictures.

That is some rooster tail.

The next picture speaks for it self. I don’t have to say a single word about it.

That is a moment in time that I always talk about that probably will never be duplicated again.

We all had a good time even if the races never got started. Hope you enjoy the photos.
