THE William Carson Mansion

Eureka House 001 copy 3

One of the most photographed Victorian houses in California, and perhaps in the United States  The mansion is in the same condition as when first constructed in the 1880’s.  The designers, Samuel and Joseph Newsom, were well respected San Francisco architects who heartily embraced the concept of the “picturesque”, a quality that continues to fascinate all who see the Carson Mansion .

The Carson Mansion was owned by the descendants of William Carson until 1950, when it was sold to the Ingomar Club.

William Carson came to California about 1849 for the Gold rush. Over a few years of felling and hauling lumber, he got out of  gold mining, and spent full time in the lumber  business. William Carson bought the mill with a partner and went on the start a railroad again with a partner.  You can read more at  Wikipedia.

The Carson Mansion is on the redwood coast of Humboldt Bay in the city of Eureka California. I have been by the mansion many – many times and have photographed it just about every time. This is a piece of art – the workmanship is superb and flawless.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Threshold 2

Post A Week                                                          4/14/2014

I know that this challenge was couple of weeks ago. I shot this picture last week while we were in Tunica, Mississippi but I didn’t have my card reader with me.I shot this picture especially for this challenge. So I said to myself what the heck I’m going to post it anyway.

Then I thought I couldn’t show just one, so I put together a few more. Hopefully to entertain your eyes.

This beautiful Victorian house is in Eureka,California  I have admired it for many years every time I would go North on Vacation, which was at least once a year from 1970 to 1997. It was built for William Carson it took over one hundred men over two years to construct. This Victorian house  is called the Carson Mansion. I have many photographs  but one in particular that I love BUT I’ll have to look for it.

Last week the challenge was monuments  and I posted about Powder Works Gun Powder. Then it became cotton mill. The Company had a few houses for employees, they were called  Shot Gun Houses.  A “shotgun house” is a narrow rectangular domestic residence, usually no more than 12 feet (3.5 m) wide, with rooms arranged one behind the other and doors at each end of the house. It was the most popular style of house in the Southern United States from the end of the American Civil War (1861–65), through the 1920s. I got this information –  From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia –  The threshold to  life for some.

I do have a few others that someone else took of me with my granddaughter. This probably one of my favorites.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Object

Post a Week

I’m back – took a couple of weeks off and did nothing. Sat around, watched TV and got fat. I have to admit it all didn’t happen in two weeks.  It just snuck up on me. I think the holidays had something to do with it.  Hopefully the weather will stop raining and the weather will start warming up so we can get outside a little more.

Here are my pictures of those beautiful Carousel Horses I’m really crazy about   I would go to Santa Monica several time a year and walk the pier and often stop to watch the carousel. One time a group that I had belonged  to had a big birthday party (private party) at the carousel. It was a blast got to ride the horses and be a kid again.

These are a couple of pictures I took of them. They had just been refurbished and beautified shortly before these pictures were taken.

You are probably wondering what this is. The challenge for this week was an object, if I showed the whole picture it would be a thing. So I’m going to show you a brilliant Yellow object that I took a picture of.

I love the vivid colors of this boat. That’s what caught my eye and my camera’s eye. sunset black 001 copy

This sunset has a lot of color yet the earth is almost black. I felt this was a good saturation of colors.

English Phone Booth 001 copy

The old English Phone Booth was in Arizona next to the London Bridge on the Colorado River. Interesting place with a lot of boaters and swimmers in the water with food places galore.

These silk flowers were at a booth on Alvera Street in Los Angeles.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Nostalgic

Post a Week, Post A Day                                                   2013/07/09

When I get nostalgic I would load my bike on the back of my car and drive down to Santa Monica Beach and park, take my bike off then ride down to Venice Beach. There is a nice bike/roller blade concrete trail down to Venice Beach, that goes to points further South and the same to the North of Santa Monica.. There was always something going on at Venice Beach and plenty to see.. It helps take my mind off what ever I’m fixated on. In other words gets me out of my head. Here are some photos that I’ve taken down a Venice Beach area. There are a lot of place to grab a bite to eat if your hungry.

This guy has been doing this for as long as I can remember. He has electric guitar with speakers, I believe they are battery operated. I’ve seen him in a couple of movies as an extra. It is an enjoyment to watch and listen to him. He just roller skates around the area playing his guitar.

I’ve only have seen this person a couple of times . I really don’t know that much about him but was worth taking his picture.

Venice Beach Street Performer 001 copy

There is a clothing store and on the weekends there are male models out in front of the store.  They are like mimes but I think that is wrong word  these models stand in one place and don’t move. I guess they are more like a human dummies.

This was just a distraction and pretty at that.

Venice Beach Pretty Girl 001 copy

You never know what your going to see. These young ladies are all dress up for something but I don’t know what. They were eye catching in their garb, so much so I had to take a photo.

At the time I took this picture I believed that the baby in this picture was a doll. Now that I look at this picture again I’m not sure. Because I thought it was a doll is why I took this photo.

I’ve posted this a few times because I like the colors, configuration, and the symmetry of the kites

This were I go when I feel Nostalgic – Well I use to go, I’m on the East Coast now and  it to far to ride my bike and I’m not as young as I use to be.

Weekly Photo Challenge” The World Through My Eyes

Post a Week/ Post a Day

This young man now has his own condo and is in the tech field. He knew more about computers than I did back in 2004.  When he was 9/10 years old he was fiddling with computers and programs. He’s all grown up now!

Justin 001 copy

This shot was at a Blue Grass Festival and this young man was sitting right in front of me . This may not have been the right lighting but it was the right moment. You can never go back and duplicate this photo or any of the others that I’m posting. Some times one has to grab the picture regardless of the lighting. This is what is called a moment in time and it carries a lot of weight in the photo world.

Little Boy Eating Ice Cream Sandwich 001 copy

This young lady is all grown up now.  She went to college in Santa Barbara, CA  and decided to stay there. I’m not sure if she is teaching there or not but I think that was her major.

This gentleman was at an apple festival and was nice of him to let me take a photo of him. His name is Smokey Joe.

I’m posting this picture because it is about lighting and composition, placement of subject and allowing the river to lead up to the subject. I saw a similar photo like this in a gallery in Sedona, AZ.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Curves

I was thinking of posting a picture of the Golden Arches of McDonalds, Lord knows that I have been there enough times. Then I thought about Bridges with there magnificent cures or how about roads that I have driven over with our motor home, with some of them so curvy that I thought the back end of the motor home was catching up with the front. I thought any of those photos would be great, but I have decided to post photos of natural curves, ones that nature made.

The first one of course is the Grand Canyon with a tree that gave me a natural curvature and framed of the Grand Canyon. What a beautiful view!

This photo was taken in Lassen National Park with the natural curvature of the stream with beautiful green grass and tree lined pasture, the mountains in the back ground with snow on them. I feel that this is another great photo depicting  the natural curvature in nature.

Lassen Nat Park copy

I have another photo similar to this photo that I took in Maui that I entered in Las Angeles County Fair that Won a Gold Medal. I’ll have to see if I can find it and put on my blog some time. Here we have two curves, one is the curvature of the mountain and the other in the curvature of the rainbow ,with the sugar cane in the fore ground.

Maui Rainbow 1 001 copy

I don’t have a clue were I took this picture and don’t even like spiders. This spider was very cooperative, I know that because he/she didn’t bite me. I took this picture because I like the way the web looked with all the intersections, the curvature of the web. I’m posting it because I have never posted it anywhere before and couldn’t find a better place or theme to use it.

These are my entry’s  for this challenge of curves.
