I was getting worried because I couldn’t find another picture for this challenge. If ropes are frayed or clothing frayed I throw then out. I don’t normally take pictures of them. So I’m at a loss for this challenge. Then I ran across this picture and it says  ‘Don’t Worry Be Happy” . Relax  so here are my choices.

If you look in the lower right hand corner, I believe that is me but not really sure because I know that when the sun drops lower in the west shadows become longer.  I can say that if that isn’t my Silhouette than it most be someone else’s.

Weekly Photo Challenge:Zigzag

PostaWeek/PostaDay                                          Aug 1, 2014

You need to be careful how far you zig or zag on this road.

DSC_2296

As near as I can find out some of these trails go a mile down in the canyon – that is 5280ft down remember that is 5280 ft. back up. It is all hiking so be fit. when I was there I calculated the distance divided by my age – I got down 5 ft. and back up. My mind says lets do it and my body says your crazy.

In this picture you can see people coming back up the trail.

I young man sitting on a rock ledge checking out the view of the Grand Canyon. The best seat in the canyon.A Seat With AView 1

Here are two people sitting in the best two people seat in the Grand Canyon checking out the view from their vantage point. Wait a minute that is what I said in the above picture. The truth is that I know photos have more character when there is people in the photograph. I never would have thought I would see anyone sitting on the edge of the Grand Canyon but to see the same thing twice in one day blew me away.

I shot a waterfalls in Maui several years ago ,when I was barely starting photography, I entered it into the Los Angeles County Fair and it got an honorable mention. I was told by my instructor that if I had had a person in the photo it would have taken first place in not the Grand Champion. I never forgot that!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Threshold

Post A Week

My favorite model is Cooter my dog. He appears to be, that is I have a lot of photos of him, from the time we first rescued off the streets when he was only a couple months old. Here he is going through the threshold of a pass through rock.

The “Guardian” at the threshold of one of the greatest wonders of the world.  Guardian is the name I gave this rock that overlooks the Grand Canyon. When I took this picture I was thinking that it looked like a statue over looking the canyon that the makers of the canyon put it there. DSC_1483 copy The Guardian of the Canyon

Weekly Photo Challenge: Grand

PostaWeek

Just recently there was a news article about a very large boulder at one of our national parks that a couple of boy scouts leveraged with the aid of a pole toppled the rock from were is sat for millions of years.

Having worked for the Army Corp of Engineers for a couple of years, one of the things you are not to do is deface government property.

Which brings me back to this photograph. This rock has probably been setting here in the Grand Canyon for millions of years.

I’ve had the enjoyment of visiting the Grand Canyon a couple of times and each time it takes my breath away. It is so amazing, deep and beautiful with all the rock formations.   I could probably go back there several more times and feel the same way. Sometimes you you see something and you can never get enough of it.

If you have been following my blog , then you probably know that we have been motor homing in our RV’s for several years. We bought a house back in January this year and this will be our first Christmas in this house.  Our son, his wife and our grand daughter came up on Nov 23, 2013. Our grand daughter wanted to decorate a Christmas Tree for us. WE went into town and bought a tree. From the time she got here almost until she left she slept. It seems that she had been on a field trip to Washington DC with kids from her school for a few days and did some late nights. That’s okay at least she came to see us or was it we saw her catching some ZZZZ.  We love her any way.

Our Daughter-in law decorated the tree. Don’t you think she did a great job?  She decorated the tree while our son and I cut fire wood, He did most of the work.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Masterpiece

Post a Week

A few years ago I went to Maui with my photography class of 16/17 classmates for a photography trip of 10 days.  We would go from photo hot spot to photo hot spot. We would all be photographing the same thing. So I just watched what everyone else was doing so I decided to shoot the same thing but a little different.

Are teacher, Mr. King, was a very good teacher and would let you know what you were doing wrong and how to correct it. Well, in Maui we had 5 days of shooting then we had to turn in our rolls of 35 mm slide film. He arranged to have all the film sent to Honolulu for developing and shipped back the next day.

We had to put together 15 slides to present for a slide show and critique in two days. Problem was that there was only one projector. Some people had 12 to 17 boxes of 36 slides they wanted to go through before they passed along the projector.

I found out who had the projector and went to see if they where done with it.  The couple said,  they needed it a little longer because, between them they had 17 rolls each of slides and were having a hard time collecting 15 slides each for the critique. I went back to my room and thought what did I do wrong because I only had two rolls of 36.

When I got the projector, I started sorting through my slides and discovered that I had a hard time submitting only 15. I still felt I must have been doing something wrong. Did I miss a field trip or two. Thursday came and it was time for the critique. I was very nervous because I must have forgotten something. It was finally my turn to show my slides and was preparing for the chorus of how bad my photos were. In stead to my surprise Mr. King complemented me on 8 out of the fifteen slides.

When we got back to the states class mates started thinking about getting what pictures  they wanted to enter into the Los Angeles Fair. When it became time to get are fair pictures ready people were scurrying  around to get there photos developed and mounted for the show. Everyone was allowed to enter 4 prints, and there was several categories. This was the first time that I would enter 4 prints, last year I only entered two. The fair had there judging and only the winners were displayed. Two of my photos from Maui were displayed, one won a Gold Medal and the other an Honorable Mention.

The reason I’m telling this story is that I never thought I was very good at photography, because I didn’t know how to draw a straight line without a ruler. I wasn’t artistically  inclined  so I had to learn what makes a good photo. That took a lot of practice. I would shoot two rolls of 36 per month and have them printed so I could see how they turned out.  Today with digital cameras and computers it is a lot cheaper.

I took 51/2 years at night school with Mr.King – he was a good instructor.

This is a few photos that I have that I think are very good. There are many more but I didn’t want show an album or two.

I know that there is much more for me to learn especially with all this digital age ,photo shop and computers. That may happen at sometime but not today.

A Word A Week Challenge: Unexpected

– A Word A Week –                                               2013/7/20

Two Brave Souls 2

I never expected to see two people sitting on  the edge of these rocks with their legs hanging over, with the canyon being several thousand feet down. I have been to the Grand Canyon a few times but I have never saw this before. Looking at the picture you can see that the person in the foreground is not as comfortable as the other person, see the way he/she is leaning back. I would call  this a moment in time, that is, you may never see this again.
