Weekly Photo Challenge:On Top

Post a Week                                                                    4/18/2014

I young man sitting on a rock ledge checking out the view of the Grand Canyon. The best seat in the canyon.A Seat With AView 1

Here are two people sitting in the best two people seat in the Grand Canyon checking out the view from their vantage point. Wait a minute that is what I said in the above picture. The truth is that I know photos have more character when there is people in the photograph. I never would have thought I would see anyone sitting on the edge of the Grand Canyon but to see the same thing twice in one day blew me away.

I shot a waterfalls in Maui several years ago ,when I was barely starting photography, I entered it into the Los Angeles County Fair and it got an honorable mention. I was told by my instructor that if I had had a person in the photo it would have taken first place in not the Grand Champion. I never forgot that!

Two Brave Souls 2

My wife and I went to watch our granddaughter do her competition cheer. This is not her group – I had trouble with my camera.

Heh, grandpa this is pretty cool.

DSC_1206 copy

Grandpa, hurry up we can’t hold our breath much longer.

DSC_1207 copy

It is scary enough photographing the belly of one sting ray and holding your breath and worrying about getting your camera wet- but a whole flock – gaggle – swarm  how about a bunch.

Don’t you just love photography. This is better than Star Wars.

I love the vivid colors of this boat. That’s what caught my eye and my camera’s eye. sunset black 001 copy

This sunset has a lot of color yet the earth is almost black. I felt this was a good saturation of colors.

English Phone Booth 001 copy

The old English Phone Booth was in Arizona next to the London Bridge on the Colorado River. Interesting place with a lot of boaters and swimmers in the water with food places galore.

Silk Flowers 001 copy

These silk flowers were at a booth on Alvera Street in Los Angeles.

I walked outside this evening in December and there where hundreds of bird out there flying around and seems like all of them were screeching,I took several photos. It was scary out there, all the time I was photographing I was thinking of the Hitch Cock movie the Birds.  I sent a few of  them to Leanne Cole Photography in Australia to see what she could with them in Photo Shop. She did a fabulous job on them. I have been waiting for the right challenge to come along and this is it. Thank You Leanne.

Weekly Photo Challenge:Big

Postaweek

My first thought this was a no brainer, I’ll just post another picture of a large pumpkin. I said to myself, “No I really need to post something different”.

I searched my photo library for something that was huge and over the top. “Maybe photos of the Grand Canyon, That’s huge!  Well maybe not that’s because I’ve already posted pictures of the Grand Canyon”, which I dearly love and think it’s breath taking.

Then I came up with something that probably weighs over two tons. Now that’s pretty darn big. These weigh over two tons.DSC_1169 copy

DSC_1176 copy   You can get sense of how large these mammals are. The trainers look small compared to the whales.

DSC_1185 copy Shortly after I took these pictures, sometime later there was some controversy about the trainers being in the water with the whales. I don’t know if that has been settled.

There has been a couple of serious incidents to the trainers over the years directly related with the whales.

Ken Peters 39 sustained a broken foot was dragged under water by, not Shamu but a stand in, named Kasatka. She is 17 foot and weighs over 5000 pounds.  11/30/2006 San Diego,CA

Dawn Brancheau 40 was not so lucky. “The wale grabbed her by the waist drug her and shook her and held her under water,” one of the trainers said.  That was in February 25,2010 in Orlando,FL. The wale, not Shamu, but the wale’s name was Tillikum a male whale who has sired 13 off springs.
